Superman is a superhero film released in 2025 and directed by James Gunn. It stars David Corenswet as Superman, Nicholas Holt as Lex Luthor, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
As a baby, Kal-El was sent to Earth from Krypton to escape a war, and was found and taken in by Johnathon and Martha Kent. There, he was named Clark. He has powers, and took on the persona of Superman. Outside of being a superhero, he is a journalist and in a relationship with Lois Lane, another journalist.
After Superman stopped an invasion by Boravia, the US government began discussing his powers and their concerns. Lex Luther, a billionaire who hates Superman, is involved in these discussions as a consultant and states he could defeat Superman if needed.
Lex Luthor wants to take down Superman, information about Superman’s biological parents come out, there are threats again from Boravia, and Clark struggles with his relationship.
The biggest theme with Superman as a character is his dual identities as a Kryptonian sent to Earth versus his Smallville upbringing. Clark searches for belonging in a world where he is so different.
The director, James Gunn, stated that the film tells “the story of America,” which can be read about here. He explains that an immigrant coming from another place and populating the country is a basic part of America, and a key to the story of Superman.
Morals play a big role in the film as well. How do human morals apply to an allpowerful alien? Superman believes that you never kill no matter what, while others believe it is important to have balance. These differing views create a rift between Clark and Lois.
I have always loved Superman as he has been my dad’s favorite superhero. It has been interesting to see how he has been represented in the media over the years. Superman is a symbol of hope, he is kind, he does everything he can to help people, which was represented strongly in this film. Watching this movie felt nostalgic as it went back to the roots of who Superman is.
I am an optimistic person and tend to see the good in people. This movie promotes kindness and puts out the message that kindness is punk, that it is cool. It is a message I thoroughly connect with. If you want to feel happy and hopeful, you should watch this movie.
